Why Wednesday 2/10/10

It's Why Wednesday! This helpful (I'm using the term very loosely here) little feature is called "Why Wednesday" and is a place for us to vent/complain about the little things, or big things, that are bugging us this week. I'll post a couple of "Why"s and then let you take it from there in the comment section. Go ahead and spill.

Why can't my daughter stop scratching her face?  she scratces an itchy spot, makes a teeny tiny scratch in the skin, and then wont leave it alone until it's enormous and at risk of infection!  She has looked like this in the winter for the past 2 years!
the longer mark on her cheek is from a sledding mishap.

Why does it snow for 2 days straight? It was so dangerous out there monday night that all three kids missed their haircut appointment, an appointment they were really looking forward to! An appointment that I had showered/bathed all three kids during the day so their hair would be clean and nice for! grrr...

Why must the hard-on-the-waistline peanut butter cookies that are sitting in a Tupperware container on my counter taste SOOOO good?  I can't keep my hands off of them!

Love You Forever

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch
This book is my absolute favorite childrens book!  How could I get through a month of book blogging, and valentines week, without sharing this book.  If you do not have this book, purchase immediately!  I can NOT get through this book without crying.  I read it to the kids this morning and had to take a few pauses and pull myself together so I wouldn't freak the kids out!  Just sharing excerps with you will not do it justice, so I'm going to read the whole thing, and show you most of the pictures.  So, unless you're not a blubbering emotional cryer, grab some kleenexes, and sit back and let me tell you a story.

A mother held her new baby and very slowly rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.   And while she held him, she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be.

The baby grew.  He grew and he grew and he grew.  He grew until he was two years old, and he ran all around the house.  He pulled all the books off the shelves.  He pulled all the food out of the refrigerator and he took his mother's watch and flushed it down the toilet.  Sometimes his mother would say, "This kid is driving me CRAZY!"
But at night time, when that two-year-old was quiet, she opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor, looked up over the side of his bed; and if he was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  While she rocked him she sang:  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

The little boy grew.  He grew and he grew and he grew.  He grew until he was nine years old.  And he never wanted to come in for dinner, he never wanted to take a bath, and when grandma visited he always said bad words.  Sometimes his mother wanted to sell him to the zoo!

But at night time, when he was asleep, the mother quietly opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up over the side of the bed.  If he was really asleep, she picked up that nine-year-old boy and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  And while she rocked him, she sang:  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

The boy grew.  He grew and he grew and he grew.  He grew until he was a teenager.  He had strange friends and he wore strange clothes and he listened to strange music.  Sometimes his mother felt like she was in a zoo!

But at night time, when that teenager was asleep, the mother opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up over the side of the bed.  If he was really asleep she picked up that great big boy and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  While she rocked him she sang:  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

That teenager grew.  He grew and he grew and he grew.  He grew until he was a grown-up man.  He left home and got a house across town.  But sometimes on dark nights the mother got into her car and drove across town.  If all the lights in her son's house were out, she opened his bedroom window, crawled across the floor, and looked up over the side of his bed.  If that great big man was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  And while she rocked him she sang:  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

Well, that mother, she got older.  She got older and older and older.  One day she called up her son and said,  "You'd better come see me because I'm very old and sick."  So her son came to see her.  When he came in the door she tried to sing the song.  She sang:  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always...    But she couldn't finish because she was too old and sick.

The son went to his mother.  He picked her up and rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  And he sang this song:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my Mommy you'll be

When the son came home that night, he stood for a long time at the top of the stairs.

Then he went into the room where his very new baby daughter was sleeping.  He picked her up in his arms and very slowly rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  And while he rocked her he sang.  I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

This book has always made me get choked up, but after my son was born, it really gets the emotions rolling.
Excuse me while I go dry my eyes and eat a cookie.

It's Just Too Late

It's late sunday night, and I should already have a blog post ready to schedule for monday morning, but I don't.  I haven't touched it all weekend, and it's too late now, I just don't feel like it.  And since this little blog is not my job, it is not vital to the wellbeing of anyone, if I don't feel like it... I'm not gonna do it!  What I do feel like is climbing into bed and sleeping.  I guess I could just post a couple brainless photos just for the heck of it...

I rearranged the livingroom a little recently, and we once again have a "book area"... needs work, but here's Babydoll reading to her...um...babydoll

And a picture of what want to be doing right now

That's it, I'm going to bed, have a good monday!

Rotting Apples and Snow Men

This past week's theme was about keeping our bodies healthy, part of which was about dental health.  We talked about how when we eat sugary foods, and don't brush our teeth well enough, we can get cavities.  After talking a little bit about cavities and tooth decay, I brought out an apple for a science experiment.  We each poked a hole in the apple with a pencil to represent the little holes that our teeth can get if we don't take care of them.  Then I told them we'd look at the apple every day and see what is happening to it now that it has a hole in it.
Day 1

Day 2

I'm not going to bore you with pictures of a rotting apple every day, I'll update when it starts looking gross!

On a completely different note, look what Sweet Pea made today!

How Big Is A Pig?

I realize this is the second pig book in a row, but I didn't realize until I had already picked it, read it to the kids, and blogged about it.   But hey, there are a lot of books about pigs out there!

How Big Is A Pig?  I didn't choose this book to blog about because of the great story, life lessons, moral lessons.  I chose this book because of the pictures.  Instead of drawn or computer generated illustrations, these are made mostly with felt.  I'll just share some of the pages with you.

Some dogs are quick; some dogs are slow.  But how big is a pig?  Do you think you know?

Some hens are in; some hens are out.  But how big is a pig? What's this all about?

Some cats are wild;

some cats are tame.  But how big is a pig? Are they all the same?

Some geese are dirty; some geese are clean.  But how big is a pig? How many have you seen?

Some horses are young; some horses are old.  But how big is a pig?  Have you been told?

Some pigs are big;

some pigs are small...

But this pig is my mama and she's the biggest of us all!

The detail of this book keeps me coming back!

This page, with the wild cat, is the kids favorite :o)
I just can't help but touch the pages, expecting to feel fabric, only to feel glossy paper.

Homemade Mocha

Are you taking care of kids and can't get away to pick up a mocha at your nearest Caribou coffee shop?  Well you could try what I tried today!

First take a cup of coffee that was brewed 9 hours ago, because it's 3:00 and you need a pick-me-up, and heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes.

Next because you have dark chocolate chips in the cupboard, dump a palm-full of them in the cup.

Because you take care of kids for a living, well at least I do, and you have more than enough baby spoons, grab one and give it a stir.  They make great stir sticks!
Now make sure the kids aren't looking and pour yourself a palmfull of chips to eat straight!
I've recently discovered how wonderful Half and Half is in my coffee, so go ahead, pour some in! then stir it again with your baby spoon.

Now there's a good chance some of the chocolate chips might spill on the table when you're taking pictures of them... quick before anyone sees... eat em up!

Now take 2.5 sips of your mocha and then 30 minutes later warm it up in the microwave because you have kids to take care of and you are far too busy to enjoy an entire cup of coffee!
