Wishful Wednesday

Wishful Wednesday is here again!

I wish I hadn't eaten most of the snickerdoodles myself.

I also wish I had more of them. go figure.

I wish every day was as awesome as a birthday.

I wish my kids would never have to hurt.

I wish I had all the answers for them.

I'm praying for those answers.

I just saw a crazy cool Xfinity 3D commercial.  It was neato.

I wish I got my butt in the shower earlier this evening, because now I have to wake up early in the morning.

Although if I don't everyone will give me plenty of space tomorrow and maybe I won't have to do anything?  But I'd still have to smell myself... so I'm going to just go ahead and wake up early.

What are you wishing for today?  No really, feel free to comment... it's fun for me to read them:o)

Planning + Preparing = Wonderful

Yesterday was wonderful. Today is wonderful.  And not just because it's my birthday today.  Let me elaborate (because if I left it at the previous three sentences you'd never visit again).

All weekend I poured over a blog that I recently discovered.  Actually I didn't discover it so much as a friend "liked" it on facebook and I checked it out from there.  So really she gets credit for my lame attempt at getting the laundry done.  Thanks Nichole!  I'll talk more about what I've picked up from that blog in another post.

Since I got only one load of laundry done, and didn't feel like doing more at 10:00, I prepared for work the next day.  I pulled out everything we were going to be doing for preschool in the morning, picked up the living room, dining room, and most of the kitchen (which of course was trashed again two hours after the kids arrived, but that's just how it works), picked up the bathroom so I could clean it in the morning, detailed my lesson plan for the next day, and (most importantly) set the coffee pot to have coffee ready to pour when I woke up.

The next morning was beautiful!  I woke up and poured myself a fresh cup of coffee, got dressed, actually did my makeup (rare occurance during the day), and sat down to check my email, facebook, and blogs while I sipped coffee and waited for kids to wake up and arrive!

This was so much nicer than waking up and seeing all the crap we hadn't put away yet from the day before, and trying to get that done before the daycare kids arrived.  It really set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Since I had pulled everything out for preschool already, when 9:30 rolled around and the preschoolers came inside from sledding, everything was ready to go and we got started without any lag time.  I also had things pulled out for the toddlers to do during this time, but tonight I'm going to take it a step further and plan more learning center material for them to do on their own while I'm helping the preschoolers with things.

Everything went so smoothly, and it really only took about an hour of prep work the night before.  Because everything flowed smoothly the kids were in great moods, which of course means they retained information more easily and participated with extra enthusiasm.  I was in a great mood, which really is beneficial for all right?  Since I did the same prep work last night, plus a little extra, today has been going just as well!

All morning I've been feeling the birthday love, and have been enjoying the chaos-free home, which is making me one happy lady!

Babydoll, the Magician

Last spring Babydoll created a magic trick, all on her own.  It was so amazing I had to grab the camera and have her do it again.

I recently found it while browsing through videos from earlier last year, laughed and remembered, and decided I just had to share it with you!

In case you didn't get the facebook status memo, if you look in the right column toward the top you'll see a box that allows you to sign up to receive posts via email.  That way you'll know if there is or isn't a new post each day.  I believe I have it set to send emails to subscribers between the hours of 3 and 5AM Central time.

You'll no longer miss new posts or winding up checking here only to see that there was nothing new!

Have a Happy Monday, and a Fantastic Week everyone!

Dinner Out With the Family

If there was one thing we used to be able to do when we had just one child, that we are not able to do with three children, it is go out for dinner as a family.  Well, actually there are lots of things that are easier with one child than three children, but that's beside the point.

Going out to eat with three kids gets expensive.  Not only do the adult size sandwich basket meals seem to keep getting more expensive, we're also paying for 3 kids dinners, and fending off pleas for dessert.  Last time my kids asked for dessert when we went out for dinner I told them if they started watering the money tree we'd start ordering dessert.  They then asked, "what money tree?" and I responded with, "Exactly."

I was trying to remember the last time the five of us when out to eat, and I can't remember anything since sometime last summer!  For Christmas one of my daycare families gave me a generous giftcard to Davanni's, a pizza place, and we used that giftcard tonight.

You can imagine my excitement at the end of the daycare day when I looked at my cluttered kitchen table and my dirty dishes and realized that I didn't have to take care of any of that before dinner!  Sure it means that I still have a kitchen left to clean tonight, but it gave me an opportunity to relax a little after work.

Even though Little Man was a bit crabby and restless before our pizzas came, it was a wonderful time out as a family.  Everyone got their fill of pizza.  Little Man kept holding up his pizza and saying, "Wow! kejklsdkfnav Wow!" Babydoll ended up with two balloons to blow up and play with while we waited, and Sweet Pea was making bets with Spencer on whether or not she could finish her second huge piece of pizza.  Not one to give in to peer pressure she was only a few bites away from winning before she decided to lose because she didn't want to finish it.  Anyone who knows Sweet Pea's eating habits knows she could have certainly finished 2 big pieces of pizza if she wanted to!

It was a wonderful evening out, and even though I still have a ton to do, I feel a little more refreshed and ready to take it on!

By the way, Davanni's doesn't know me, read my blog, or ask me to blog about them. But if they did ask I would definitely blog about them some more in exchange for free pizza. :o)

Phonics Toys That Ticked Me Off

I love educational toys. Love love love educational toys.  Because I have young children, and I do daycare, and I teach preschool to these children, I get to research them, buy them, and use them whenever I want.  For the most part I'm pretty good at picking out educational supplies and toys, but sometimes they wind up backfiring on me.

These magnet letters for the Leap Frog Fridge Phonics dealibobbers are one of those toys.

In general I love these dealibobbers! (fun word huh?) The single Fridge Phonics one teaches the letters and the letter sounds, the Word Whammer teaches the letters, letter sounds, and has different settings for spelling real words and creating words on their own.

Both Thingymajiggies have a music button that when you press it, it sings the alphabet... this is a VERY popular button let me tell you.  And, thank the creators for including a volume switch!

These have both been well-loved toys.  Sadly though, the Word Whammer was purchased way back when Sweet Pea was 2 or 3 years old and we've lost most of the letters for it, and it doesn't work anymore, so that's a bummer.  Also sad, I have tried replacing the batteries for the single unit but it doesn't seem to be working anymore either.. it is only a couple years old.

The only problem I have with this toy, and it's an annoying one, is that we have been using the letters as fridge magnets for holding various art and papers to the fridge... except they don't ever stay on the fridge.

The are big enough to not be a choking hazard if they fall onto the floor and into the hands of a little kid, but they are also big enough to be really easily bumped into when walking around the fridge.  Not to mention Little Man's favorite thing to do with the magnets (since the doohickies aren't working) is to swish all the magnets within reach onto the floor, which means they fall to the floor, get kicked around, stepped on, and are always in the way when sweeping!

groan.

this has been an all too common sight for far too long.

I finally got sick of it and put up the thingymajigs and threw all unused magnet letters into a bag and hung that bag up in a cupboard.  I did not do this with any kind of cheer or good feelings... I threw the letters in the bag and stuffed that bag away as quickly as possible... I had kicked my last magnet across the floor!

Or so I thought.

Because we're still using some of the letters as fridge magnets.. because they are holding stuff up... they are apparently still determined to be on my floor.  When I knocked one down today I wanted to throw the damn thing out the window!

I guess a run to the store is in order where I can find a better type of magnet for my fridge... big enough to not be choked on or swallowed, strong enough to hold up paper, and flat enough to not be a shoulder hazard.

All this lamenting aside, they are great toys, but only under these circumstances:
Your fridge is located in a spot where you will not walk past it and brush it with your arm.
or
You keep the magnets in a container only to be brought out when used and put away when not.
for example
You wouldn't even need to use them on the fridge, play with them at the table, also baking
sheets make excellent surfaces for playing with magnetic letters or numbers.

These circumstances are what keep me from throwing my Fridge Phonics thingy away all together.  If I can get it working again (perhaps different batteries.. the ones I tried were unused but pretty old) I'll bag it up in a zippered bag and it will come out to be used at the table

I really don't know why I'm hanging onto the non-functioning-letter-missing word whammer.

That I should really just go toss out now.

All in all, it's a pretty great toy... just don't count on those fridge phonics magnets necessarily staying on the fridge.

Bloggie Award Plea

"I'm just girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her."

That Notting Hill moment was brought to you by Abby, in the hopes that you will show your love (or mild like for) my blog.

It's Bloggie Award season!

A Bloggie is a highly coveted award for bloggers.  There are several categories and anyone can nominate and vote for their favorite blogs.  As I understand it, the winner of each category doesn't actually receive anything except for the Weblog of theYear winner... they get 2011 cents, or if you're as remarkable at math as I am... $20.11.  The real prize is the blog traffic that comes with winning, and the opportunities for making a little moolah from ad revenue.  Last year the Weblog of the Year went to The Pioneer Woman... as it rightfully should have, she was one of the two blogs I voted for in that category.

The way it works is like this.  Anyone can to go the Bloggie website and nominate their favorite blogs for as many or as few categories as they wish.  Then some select group takes all the nominations and narrows them down to 5 or 6 finalists.  After that, public voting reopens and you can vote for your favorite among the finalists.  The finalists are anounced February 27th.

I'm sure I'll never reach the level of P-Dub (as I and many others so affectionately call her) and I'm ok with that.  But there's one category in which I can at least hope to get a nomination or two...

Best New Weblog!  This category is for blogs that were started in the previous year... it's really my only shot! :o)

The only tough part of the nomination is that you can't just nominate one blog, you have to nominate three.  And since I'm pulling for Best New Weblog, you would have to nominate 2 other blogs that were started last week.

If you don't read a lot of blogs, specifically new ones, I'll help you out with some links to active new blogs that I enjoy.

http://prairiemother-prairiemother.blogspot.com/

http://spikediet.blogspot.com/

http://brasslocketphoto.blogspot.com/

http://whitepeachphoto.com/category/blog/

There are several other fantastic blogs that I follow, but I don't think any of them were started in 2010.  Check them out and pick 2 to hopefully nominate along with this one!

So if you to the Bloggie Award website, click on the tiny link on the far left that says, "new" and enter your nominations for best new blog of 2010.  To nominate my blog you'll enter "They Lend Me Their Hearts" under blog name, then enter http://theylendmetheirhearts.blogspot.com/ for the URL.  Then scroll all the way to the bottom to finish submiting your nomination!  Then let me know you did so I can jump up and down with delight!

Then keep an eye on your email because you'll get an email asking you to confirm your nomination.

Be aware if you plan to nominate me (someone else for that matter) that nominations are closed on January 16th.

If you feel so inclined to shoot me a nomination or two it would probably be the highlight of my week!  Along with getting my hair done tonight... which for now looks super cute by the way!  It would also be a nice birthday gesture since my birthday is on the 11th!

Wishful Wednesday

I wish you all a happy 2011!

I wish my dog hadn't puked downstairs.

I wish Greys Anatomy didn't take such a long freaking break... I miss it. and Glee.

I'm getting my hair done tomorrow night, and I'm excited because it's been a LONG time!

I wish I had a way to make that last statement a "wishful" one.

I hope I can find everyone's white/black/gray shirts and pants so I don't have to buy new ones, because we're getting a family picture taken with my parents and sister.

I wish there were more hours in the night.

I wish my hoodie was just as comfy as my fuzzy robes are.

I hope my birthday next week is a good one... I'll be 29!
